Hand, Wrist and Upper Extremity

We specialize in complex surgeries in the hand and wrist.  These include traumatic hand injuries ranging from severe industrial accidents to simple accidents at home and school.  Our surgeons are experts in repairing bones, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, and open wounds in the hand, wrist and upper extremities.  Our surgeons are trained to re-attach severed hand and/or digits.  Despite having a solid background in plastic surgery, Dr. Chen is also fellowship-trained in orthopedic hand and upper extremity surgery and has performed over thousands of complex fractures in the forearm, wrists, and hand.  He is also an expert in wrist arthroscopic surgery.

Additionally, we routinely treat patients with elective hand and wrist issues such as osteoarthritis, nerve compression problems (carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve compression), Dupuytren’s contracture (abnormal formation of scar in the palm causing contracture of the fingers), tendonitis of the hand, wrist and elbow, rheumatoid arthritis requiring finger joint replacements, Raynaud’s disease (cold, painful hands due to poor circulation), Berger’s disease (decreased circulation to the hands from smoking), ulnar impaction (wrist pain caused by long ulnar bone), Kienbock’s disease (necrosis of the lunate wrist bone from circulatory issues), DeQuervain’s tendonitis (radial wrist pain from tendonitis), and congenital hand problems such as syndactyly (fused fingers) and polydactyly (extra digits).

In addition to our expertise, Alan Chen Surgical Associates is one of very few medical offices in the Chicagoland area that have a Joint Commission Certified operating suite.  To our patients, that means we can safely perform surgery on them in the same facility with convenience, but importantly, with safety.  Moreover, having this operating suite will allow our surgeons to see patients in emergency situations, and if necessary, operate on them the same day without setting foot in a hospital.  In other words, most patients who are injured during work can skip the emergency room and be seen in our office without going through the wait and headache typically seen in most hospital based emergency rooms.
