Breast Reconstruction

Improvement in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer over the past 50 years has improved patient’s survival and quality of life following this terrible and prevalent condition. Recent statistics have revealed that approximately 12% of women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives with as much as 50% requiring a mastectomy as part of their treatment. Just as we have seen improvements in diagnosis and treatment so too has our ability to create stable and cosmetically pleasing results been enhanced to higher and higher levels, even in very difficult circumstances. The expansion of radiation as an effective additional treatment for breast cancer has resulted in increased awareness on the part of the reconstructive surgeons to the damage to surrounding tissue. In circumstances where radiation is used, more advanced procedures are oftentimes needed to attain reliable and cosmetically pleasing results. Generally, reconstruction after mastectomy can be divided into two categories: implant based or autologous (your own tissue) based reconstruction; with the exception that sometimes both are necessary for success and desired result. Doctors Chen and Endara are proud to provide patients with customized reconstructions based on their needs and goals using a variety of the most advanced surgical techniques available today.
