Abdominoplasty

An excess of belly skin and fat can occur for a variety of reasons in a variety of places.  In many patients, the primary problem is an overabundance of fatty tissue underneath the skin and can be addressed with weight loss either from dieting, exercise, or in more severe cases, weight loss surgery.  Although the weight loss is a very important component for treatment of the excess tissue it is often an incomplete fix as there is also an overgrowth of skin that does not respond to traditional forms of weight loss.  This abundance of skin responds only to removal, a procedure known as a panniculectomy.  If the excess skin is combined with excessively lax abdominal muscles resulting in a bulge that gives the appearance of excess fat then the panniulectomy is combined with tightening of the muscles; a procedure known as an Abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty surgery is an incredibly powerful tool for reshaping the abdomen.  By combining removal of the excess skin, which can cause deformities commonly referred to as "muffin top and flat tire," and tightening the midline muscles patients can enjoy a much flatter and more cosmetically pleasing abdomen.  These two procedures can be combined to the extent necessary to deliver the desired results and customized for each patient based on their underlying anatomy and ultimate goals.  Certain patients have only laxity of the abdomen and would therefore benefit from a "mini-abdominoplasty", wherein minimal to no skin is excised but the abdominal muscles are tightened. Others have tight abdominal muscles but an excess of skin and fat. These patients are best addressed with a panniculectomy alone.   A proper treatment plan, therefore, involves combining these two powerful procedures in ways that will optimize patient’s goals and desires.

People particularly well suited for this type of procedure include those who have undergone massive weight loss surgery, mothers who have noted an excess of belly skin and fat or bulging that is not responding completely to diet and exercise, anyone who is unable to get rid of belly skin and fat despite diet and exercise and patients with midline abdominal wall hernias.
